Yosh

Yosh shares some insight into his hopes for a fairer eco system for producers and performers as well as the production process for making his track ‘No More (Dub)’ (out on OTBD009).

Mark Ramsey aka Yosh is no stranger to the game. Born and bred in South London, he first found his footing playing on London pirate radio stations, backed by the support and deep music collection of his older brother.

His broad skillset and sonic versatility quickly stood out, earning him a residency on the famed Upfront FM, where he pulled in waves of loyal listeners and built a dedicated following.

In 2020, Yosh flipped the script and began producing breaks and 2-step rollers that were instinctively picked up by respected labels such as Time Is Now, Constant Sound/VIVID, Dr. Banana, Dansu Discs, and Holding Hands.

Drawing on formative experiences from raving at underground jungle and garage nights in the ’90s, as well as his time soaking up legendary Ibiza club culture while living on the island, Yosh has firmly planted himself at the forefront of the ever-evolving garage and house scene.

Could you tell us a bit about the process of making your track? How did it come about?

Yeah, this track came together pretty naturally. I wrote most of it at home in Margate, just messing around with ideas until something clicked. I usually start with drums and bass to get the groove right, then build from there!

Do you have a ritual when composing music and how do you stay inspired after all these years?

I don’t really have a strict ritual, although I usually set a vibe by listening to other tracks just whatever sparks something, could be as small as a sample or vocal,I stay inspired by digging for new music, taking breaks, and just staying curious.

If you could travel into the future and bring us back newfound wisdom that could help music producers make a sustainable living from their craft, what would you hope to experience?

My hope would be for fairer pay and direct fan support, tools to build real communities, and ways for producers to diversify income. Also, sustainable touring and better support for artists’ well being so they can thrive creatively and financially without burning out.

How is making a living from music affecting your creative output? Do you feel as free as when you started?

I still feel as creatively free as when I started however there’s more pressure now to make music that pays the bills. I try to protect space for creativity without expectations and the key feature is to always keep it fun

At Outboard, our aim is to establish a new way of remunerating music producers , fairly and transparently. Why did you choose to come on board?

I came on board because the vision really resonated with me. Fair, transparent pay for producers is long overdue, and Outboard feels like a step towards a healthier, more sustainable future for artists like me
