Frederik Anthony

We spoke with Frederik Anthony and he shared the importance of having a good network to enhance creativity and progression, the effect of AI in music production, a game changing tool and why he’s excited to join Outboard.

Frederik Anthony is a DJ & producer who’s been quietly going about his business playing and producing a wide range of styles firmly rooted in dance music.

His fathers record collection and introduction to sound system culture was the backdrop that shaped Frederik's musical taste, heavily influenced by House, UKG, jungle, reggae and soul. Having built a healthy collection of his own, he was a regular fixture djing on London’s pirate radio scene in the mid 2000s.

If you could go back in time and give guidance to your younger self, what would you say that would impact your career the most?

Surround yourself with like minded people that share your passion for music. There’s always something to learn and also teach to keep each other inspired and moving forward, oh and use the best samples possible.

At Outboard, our aim is to establish a new way of remunerating music producers , fairly and transparently. Why did you choose to come on board?

It was a no brainer, music selected for the right reasons benefitting artists and fans/subscribers alike. Music platforms/streaming services in their current form aren’t doing this for the majority.

What is the one thing that you always do when producing that if you didn’t, it wouldn’t be a Frederik Anthony track?

Always make sure I find the sweet spot in the groove that moves me, I can’t finish or progress a project until I’ve got it.

When producing, are you more in the box or do you use Outboard too? Could you share with us a single unit or tool that is a true game changer for you, and why?

All in the box for me, no particular reason just how I’ve always done it, would love to try hardware though. My game changing tool would be the “radiator plugin” from soundtoys. Really colours the sound nicely to my ear, use it on every track, and it’s especially good for subbass.

If you could travel into the future and bring us back newfound wisdom that could help music producers make a sustainable living from their craft, what would you hope to experience?

It would be interesting to get a glimpse into what effect AI technology has on music production. I still believe that with time it will be revealed that AI can’t replicate music that truly loves us.

People of today will continue to have/build a sustainable living, because music will always be an expression of unique human experience, so long as we continue giving as much of ourselves to the process as possible.
