Live From The Moon

We had a chat with Live From The Moon, one of the creative aliases of Mattia Carbonara on the process behind making his track Bail Me Boogie and why he values new, fairer systems that addresses the current imbalances within the electronic music scene

Could you tell us a bit about the process of making your track? How did it come about?  Can you remember where you wrote it? What methods did you use to produce it?

This track came about when I came across an old percussion sample that I found to have a lot of life and movement. I then used a Tr606 drum machine to create and process elegant but sleazy elements, sampled a dreamy but gangster lead, wrote the Bassline, and there you go.

That’s often how I like to start, from a sound, an idea that I can incorporate into the mood I’m feeling that day. I never produce with a goal - it’s more about being in sync and true to myself in that specific moment.

Do you have a ritual when composing music and how do you stay inspired after all these years?

Making music is only a free-time outlet for me. I need to get all my ducks in a row in my personal and professional life, in order to then feel like I can make music. It usually happens on a quiet weekend, where I’m not required to be out and about, and where I can delve deeper.

This feels like a blessing as I don’t rely on my music to make a living, so I’m never strained for creativity.

When producing, are you more in the box or do you use Outboard too? Could you share with us a single unit or tool that is a true game changer for you, and why?

My production chain mainly starts and ends in the box. I am a big big fan of Roland synths, so I tend to use the same 5-10 VSTs and Drum Machines. I also utilise a microphone and a delay rack to create textures and fx out of the box.

At Outboard, our aim is to establish a new way of remunerating music producers , fairly and transparently. Why did you choose to come on board?

I am a big fan of fair systems. The way that a platform like Outboard can slowly change the artist / publisher imbalance is truly inspiring and I am happy & grateful to be a part. I work with Brawther on a number of projects and I trust his instincts implicitly when it comes to the House music community.
