Link

Amsterdam based Link shares his neighborly connection to his track "MPC Jam", his go-to plugin as well as why it's important to stay true to yourself and not follow trends.

When Link first got in contact with house music at his local high school, he was immediately hooked. He really got deeper into the music and the artists who made the music when he went to my first house parties in Amsterdam. During that period he also started collecting and playing records. His main inspiration comes from house producers like Kerri Chandler and Brawther. He also takes a lot of inspiration from Dutch producers such as Prunk and Chris Stussy.

Could you tell us a bit about the process of making your track? How did it

come about?

I usually start all my tracks in Ableton, but for this track I took a different approach. One of my best friends (who also happens to be my upstairs neighbour in Amsterdam) bought an MPC One + and he was so kind as to let me borrow it for a few weeks. The first ideas for this track were created on that MPC, and once I was happy with it I finished the track in Ableton.

At Outboard, our aim is to establish a new way of remunerating music

producers , fairly and transparently. Why did you choose to come on board?

I think it is really refreshing to see a new platform that selects music and pays its artists fairly, especially in these days where most people only stream music and the producers that made the records are not always remunerated fairly.

What is the one thing that you always do when producing that if you didn’t, it wouldn’t be a ‘Link’ ’track?

I always try to come up with a rolling bassline that really drives the track and pushes it forward.

When producing, are you more in the box or do you use Outboard too?

Could you share with us a single unit or tool that is a true game changer for

you, and why?

I mainly produce in Ableton. One tool that is an absolute game changer for me, is the Trillian bass plugin from Spectrasonics. The variety and depth of sounds that this plugin is able to produce is really amazing. I can really recommend this plugin to anyone.

If you could give a tip to other producers, what would that be?

I would recommend to really make the music that you love. Do not pay too much attention at what is currently popular or sitting at the top of the charts. I think that if you make something you truly love yourself, you will be satisfied regardless of whether other people also like it. I also think this results in the most original tracks.
